Traverse City LASIK FAQs
How Does LASIK Eye Surgery Help?
Many people struggle with vision problems and are forced to wear glasses or contact lenses so that they can properly see. LASIK surgery is an eye procedure that is done with the use of a computer-controlled excimer laser. During LASIK surgery, the cornea is completely reshaped, improving the patient’s vision so that they can drastically reduce or even stop wearing their corrective lenses.
What Does LASIK Surgery Involve?
During the LASIK procedure, one of our surgeons uses an instrument called a microkeratome to make a small flap on the cornea; this is then folded back so that the midsection of the cornea can be examined and corrected. Once the correction is made, the flap is put back in place and the procedure is complete. LASIK eye surgery does not involve any stitches.
What Can I Expect After LASIK Surgery?
After LASIK surgery, the patient is sent home to recuperate. There is very rarely any pain or discomfort involved with the procedure. Within one to two days following surgery, patients will have full restoration of their vision.
Who Can Benefit from LASIK Surgery?
LASIK surgery was developed for patients who suffer from nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Although LASIK surgery is simple and involves minimal recovery time, it is not a good option for those who only wear glasses on occasion or are happy with their corrective lenses – LASIK surgery is for those with serious vision problems. LASIK surgery is only for patients over 18 years old and can’t be performed on women who are pregnant or nursing, or those suffering from an autoimmune disease. Are LASIK Procedures Successful?
The success of a LASIK surgery varies depending on the individual. Some patients find themselves disappointed that the procedure does not give them perfect vision. However, an FDA study found that all LASIK procedures have been shown to improve natural vision with 95 percent of patients receiving at least 20/40 vision. After a LASIK procedure, patients are able to perform regular daily activities, succeed at work, and pass a driving test. The FDA also found that two out of every three patients achieved 20/20 vision after the LASIK procedure.
Should I Expect Pain During a LASIK Surgery?
When you undergo a vision correction surgery, you will be given topical anesthetics and can expect no pain during the process. Through the recovery period, very few LASIK patients experience any pain at all; however, some report mild discomfort. Any eye irritation can usually be solved with the use of a special lubricant.
Does the Procedure Involve Both Eyes?
Most of the time, LASIK surgery is performed on both eyes the same day. It may be our doctor’s discretion if he would like to perform both eyes separately. If so, you would need to come back for another visit so that the second eye can be treated.
Can I Have LASIK Surgery if I Wear Contact Lenses?
If you currently wear contact lenses, you are still a candidate for the procedure. You will need to bring your contact lens prescription with you to your evaluation. Those who wear hard or gas permeable contacts must stop wearing them for three weeks before the exam, while soft lenses need to be removed at least one week prior.
How Soon Can I Work After My Surgery?
If you are a candidate for LASIK surgery, you should plan around your work schedule. While many patients do go back to work the next day, you could expect to take between one to three days off of work after the procedure. We are happy to help you plan your appointment around your work schedule, giving you the chance to miss minimal time on the job.
What Side Effects Should I Expect?
While LASIK surgery is a simple outpatient procedure, some people complain that they have a sensitivity to light, visual halos, and dry eyes during their recovery time. Very rarely a LASIK procedure will involve complications that can’t be improved. For the most part, patients have no negative or long-lasting side effects from the LASIK surgery.
